„Wahre Geschichte“, Gabriele Basch, 1999

“Wahre Geschichte” is an artistic mosaic floor installation located at former inner-city border crossings in Berlin. The work was created as part of an invited art competition held in 1996 and explores the theme of transition within the historical context of the division of Germany and the post-1945 era. It depicts signs and political symbols of the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany that document a temporary social condition. The use of traditional mosaic techniques transfers these symbols into the public space and makes historical developments permanently visible.
