‘Divided Berlin - A Search for Traces in Bernauer Strasse’ - Workshop for Language Learners
The workshop begins with an introduction and familiarisation with the memorial site. Together, the participants get an overview of the stations of the division of Germany with the help of visual material. They then learn about the special features of Bernauer Strasse in the former border strip. Participants will understand how to distinguish between original remains and replicas of the border fortifications. They get to know Bernauer Strasse as a place that exemplifies the history of divided Berlin.
Participants then conduct their own research in small groups. They choose a topic that interests them, e.g. life on the border, escape tunnels or ghost stations. Short texts in simple language and historical photographs are provided for each topic. The participants then explore and document the current location in photos or short film sequences. At the end, the results are presented to each other.
The workshop is aimed at language learning groups such as welcome and integration classes, integration and orientation courses. It takes place in simple, physical language and is designed to be interactive. The accompanying persons are actively involved in the workshop.
