Info Panel on “Leap to Freedom”

Between Schwedter Straße and Strelitzer Straße, walkers along Bernauer Straße will find four panels from the Berlin Wall History Trail. They mark locations where escape attempts took place: some with fatal outcomes, such as that of Ida Siekmann on August 22, 1961; some spectacular, such as that of GDR border guard Conrad Schumann; and some successful, such as the escape of 57 people who made it to West Berlin through a 140-meter-long tunnel.

Additional locations along the Berlin Wall History Trail:

  • Bernauer Straße, near house number 48
  • Bernauer Straße, near house number 78
  • Ruppiner Straße / corner of Bernauer Straße
  • Strelitzer Straße / corner of Bernauer Straße
