Views of the Wall: Berlin 1961–1990

Open-Air-Exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate

12 – 17 August 2026

The exhibition “Views of the Wall: Berlin 1961–1990” focuses on the construction of the Berlin Wall and its consequences. Through texts and numerous historical photographs, it offers insights into the history of the Berlin Wall and the unique situation at the Brandenburg Gate.

The exhibition centers on the people who had to live with the division, who observed, documented, or monitored the Wall. It shows the incredulous gaze of the early years as well as the tourist and journalistic perspectives on the structure. It also conveys the perspective of the GDR authorities, who strictly monitored the Wall, as well as that of Western security forces.

The temporary memorial site at the Brandenburg Gate is conceived and realized by Kulturprojekte Berlin, with an exhibition curated by the Berlin Wall Foundation. The installation at the Brandenburg Gate is the work vi|ew by artist Hubertus Hamm. He is represented in this project by art Next Level with support from Artikel 1 Initiative für Menschenwürde e.V.

Note
Due to the “Rave The Planet Parade” demonstration, the installation and exhibition at the Brandenburg Gate will be closed on August 15; however, they will be open on August 17, extending beyond the scheduled program period.

The exhibition is part of the special program marking the 65th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall.
