Bernauer Strasse after the Wall was Built – Simplified English

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central site of remembrance of the division of Germany. The history of Bernauer Strasse exemplifies the effects of the construction of the Wall: the destruction of urban space and lifeways, the separation of family members and friends, of flight and assistance for flight.

During the guided tour, participants will discover Bernauer Strasse and its history. The guide takes the needs of the participants into account and works with sensory tools such as sound, scent and hands-on objects. The participants are activated to make the historical site their own. They can measure the former border strip, smell what it smelled like in an escape tunnel, listen to stories told by contemporary witnesses or feel a tile from the blown-up Church of Reconciliation. This gives participants access to the history of the Berlin Wall.
