Guided Tour + Research in the Documentation Centre

Bernauer Strasse was one of the crystallisation points of the division of Germany. The range of consequences of the building of the Wall can be shown here in an exemplary way: The destruction of urban space and ways of life, the separation of family members and friends as well as the attempts to overcome the Wall.

In the guided tour The Bernauer Strasse after the Wall was built, the young people get to know the historical site and gain an overview of the historical events.

In the subsequent research, they independently explore the exhibition 1961 | 1989: The Berlin Wall in the memorial's documentation centre. They use worksheets to research various aspects of the history of the division of Germany. Flight and emigration, opposition and the Peaceful Revolution are among the topics. The young people also look at the construction of the Wall and the effects of the fall of the Wall. After the research, the young people prepare a presentation and discuss their findings together.
