Starting in 2030, the “Forum Checkpoint Charlie” will be built on the two sites east and west of the Friedrichstraße/Zimmerstraße intersection. It will be a place where people from Berlin, Germany, and around the world can come together to explore the history of the site and the Cold War and engage in conversation with one another. Leading up to the start of construction, the Berlin Wall Foundation aims not only to bring together as many expert perspectives as possible but also to incorporate the wishes and ideas of the public.

Our Vision

The redesign aims to preserve and explain the few remaining authentic remnants of the border installations without distorting the site with further reconstructions. The future “Forum Checkpoint Charlie” will be a place for learning, encounter, and exchange. An information point will serve as the first place of contact for visitors. Guided tours and educational programs will also begin here.

A free outdoor exhibition spanning both squares will bring people together and give them the opportunity to engage with this historic site, the East-West conflict, and its global implications. This will create opportunities for exchange and discussion, for active participation, and for learning. In the future, the Checkpoint Charlie is set to become a place where people enjoy spending time: The Berlin Wall Foundation is therefore advocating for traffic reduction on Friedrichstraße in this area and aims to design the historic location in such a way that it creates a public space for Berliners and visitors alike—one that not only provides information about the historic site and the Cold War but also offers a pleasant environment in which to spend time.

The official launch took place in April 2026: Since then, a competition organized by the Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing has been underway to determine the future design of Checkpoint Charlie, which will lead to its redesign. The results are to be presented in September 2026.

In the summer of 2023, the Berlin Wall Foundation organised a cultural participation process on the new place of remembrance at Checkpoint Charlie. Interested people were able to contribute their ideas on site and digitally, as well as talk about their personal connections to the border crossing. At the same time, several workshops were organised with experts in the field. The results have been summarised in a final report and will be incorporated into the conceptual considerations.

In 2022, the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing organised a participation process for interested citizens on the urban design of the site. This resulted in a set of guidelines that form the basis for the design of the place of remembrance, as well as for new development on the surrounding land.

Here you can find information about the planning process of the state of Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie.
