The Report: Photos of the GDR from the 1980s by Volker Döring

6 April – 22 July 2022

The exhibition provides a glimpse into everyday life in the GDR in the 1980s. The photographs show children and teenagers at school and as young pioneers. Youth subculture is also portrayed, including punks attending rock concerts or self-made clothes presented at fashion shows.

The photographs reflect how adolescents dealt with the educational dogmas of the GDR school system. With images of assemblies and other scenes of everyday life, the exhibition spans the period up to the Peaceful Revolution in the fall of 1989.

Volker Döring, who was born in Berlin in 1952, was a teacher in Prenzlauer Berg for nine years. He has worked since 1984 as a photographer for various cultural institutions, theatres, publishers, companies, advertising agencies, and public clients. He has also been engaged in photo projects on social issues. He was an honorary lecturer in photography at the Lette Verein Berlin until 2014. His photographs have been published in numerous books and shown in exhibitions, including at the Stadtmuseum Berlin (2001) and the Museum Pankow (2012). His new book ZeitNah, a collection of photographs from 1979 to 2014, will be published in May 2022.

The exhibition will open on 05 April 2022 at 18:30.
